This Privacy Policy explains how The Sailing Hangar ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use thesailinghangar.com (the "Platform"). It applies to all users: buyers, sellers, and visitors.

1. Who we are (Data Controller)

The Sailing Hangar is currently operated by an individual founder, based in Italy.

If The Sailing Hangar becomes operated by a registered company in the future, this section will be updated with the company's legal name, registration details, and registered address.

2. What data we collect

Account data: name, email address, phone number, password (stored encrypted), account type (individual, club/association, or dealer), and, where applicable, club or business name.

Listing data: anything you include in a listing — photos, description, price, condition, location, and the boat class or item category.

Communications: messages you send through the Platform's in-app messaging (between buyers and sellers, and between you and our support team).

Usage data: pages visited, listings viewed or saved as favorites, search filters used, device and browser type, and approximate location derived from IP address.

Cookies and similar technologies: see Section 5 below.

We do not collect payment card details, bank account numbers, or government ID numbers — the Platform does not process payments or verify identity documents.

3. How we use your data and our legal basis

4. Who we share data with

We share personal data only with the following categories of recipients, and only as needed to operate the Platform:

  • Cloud infrastructure providers: Amazon Web Services (AWS), which hosts our servers, database, file storage, and search infrastructure. AWS acts as a data processor on our behalf under a data processing agreement.
  • Other users: your public profile information (name/display name, reputation score, reviews) and listing content are visible to other users of the Platform by design. Your email and phone number are not shown publicly — other users contact you through the Platform's messaging system.
  • Legal authorities: where required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of The Sailing Hangar, our users, or the public.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties.

5. Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies for:

  • Essential cookies: required for login, session management, and core site functionality. These cannot be disabled.
  • Preference cookies: to remember your language (English/Italian) and display settings (e.g. light/dark mode).

On your first visit, you will be asked to accept or reject non-essential cookies via a cookie banner.

6. International data transfers

Your data is stored and processed within the European Union (AWS eu-central-1 region, Frankfurt, Germany). If any of your data is processed or stored outside the European Economic Area (EEA) in the future, we will ensure an appropriate safeguard is in place, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, in line with AWS's own GDPR commitments.

7. How long we keep your data

  • Account data: retained for as long as your account is active, and for 30 days afterward in case you wish to reactivate it, or as required for legal/accounting purposes.
  • Listing data: retained while a listing is active, and for 90 days after it is marked as sold or removed, for reputation and dispute-resolution purposes.
  • Messages: retained for as long as the associated account exists, unless you request deletion.

8. Your rights

Under the GDPR, if you are located in the EU/EEA (and under equivalent rights elsewhere), you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Rectify inaccurate or incomplete data
  • Erase your data ("right to be forgotten"), subject to certain exceptions
  • Restrict how we process your data
  • Data portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interest, including direct marketing
  • Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent

9. Children's privacy

The Platform is not directed at children, and you must be at least 18 years old to create an account. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.

10. Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit and at rest, and access controls on our infrastructure. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you via email or a notice on the Platform before the changes take effect.
